Here’s my first crack at a system for categorizing types of tech events:
-
User Group / Meetup
-
Presentation / Talk
-
Happy Hour / Party
-
Discussion / Summit
-
Project Collaboration / Open Lab
-
Trade Show / Conference
I scrolled through the last few months of dctechevents.com and found nothing that I couldn’t shove in one of those boxes– but that doesn’t mean it’s complete or well thought-out. I’d love to hear what anyone else thinks.

You thinking stricter categories or looser (tags) — or both? There are some tag/adjectives that could be useful — free/fee; gov’t/private sector, etc.

You might want to differentiate between user group meetings/meetups like open coffee or lunch 2.0 or the planning night hosted by hacDC vs. Talks or demos or presentations. Refresh is a group, but it is a group that hosts talks.
You may also want to provide a mechanism for differentiating between free events and commercial events. For example, if the host charges a fee to participants or provides a sales seminar that isn’t the same as an event like refresh where the speaker talks and anyone can come.

Posted 28 Dec 2008 at 12:41 pm ¶Also, “User Group” and “Meetup” have very specific meanings, and I don’t think would cover Refresh. Refresh events would be best filed under “Presentation / Talk” unless they were obviously something different like a “Happy Hour / Party”
A user group is usually product specific, like the local Linux, Mac, and SQL server groups.
Since meetups are mostly social, they might be better filed with Happy Hour / Party.
